Building Coaching as a Skill in our Leadership Team

"Do it! Get the money and do it! The most valuable thing is that you can link it directly to your business strategy and objectives and show a real return on investment."

Rebecca Berry

Rebecca Berry, HR Director at Lloyds Register joined our ILM Level 7 - Open Coaching Skills Training Programme in 2013. We caught up with her to find out what made her come on the programme and to find out what’s happening now.

What was the original catalyst for deciding to go on the course?

That’s a good question; we needed to build coaching as a skill in our leadership team and in the wider management community.  So myself alongside other HR Business Partners across the Globe needed to acquire the skills and become qualified coaches.

What was it that made you choose Notion?

Well I hadn’t realised until after I signed up for it that the venue was very close to where I lived - so that was fantastic! But I guess that showed I was willing to go wherever to be on Notion's programme.

The fact that it was directly linked to the Institute of Leadership Management and so was accredited meant I would have something to show for my time investment, as opposed to just a generic training programme. Also the way that it was structured came across as highly practical, this, alongside some great case studies made me think this was going to be a good programme at the right level for me.

Can you give some examples of specific differences the programme has made to you?

At the time I finished the programme we were plunged into a global restructure so it was all hands on deck! This had some affect on our formal sessions however I am using the skills informally most days and we are now getting back into a more formal approach.

Has it had an impact more broadly in your organisation?

We are in the process of creating a global coaching programme for the restructured management team. It is going to be done in-house based on the skills we now have, we could never have done that it we hadn’t had formal training.

What would you say your top 3 highlights were so far?

First I would have to say the networking opportunity meeting like-minded people - I am still in touch with people who were on the programme and we still even practice together! My second highlight would have to be Cathy - she was fantastic; hearing first hand and seeing her coaching ability was very inspiring. My third would be how it was structured; the teleconferences and feedback methods were challenging but supportive, providing a comfortable environment to learn in.

What would you say to someone thinking about going on the course?

Do it! Get the money and do it! The most valuable thing is that you can link it directly to your business strategy and objectives and show a real return on investment.
