Don’t Wait for a Royal Invitation to Build ‘Special’ Relationships with Your Team

This week, the President of the United States, Donald Trump enjoyed the private lunch he always wanted with the Queen at Buckingham Palace.

The President’s first official state visit, designed to renew the ‘special’ relationship between the US and the UK, is likely to be unpredictable and fraught with controversy.

As we watch that scenario play out, it might be a good idea to take some time to think about how your own leadership style impacts on the quality of relationships you have with your team.

Could your leadership style be causing controversy, or, is it getting in the way of you developing excellent rapport with the people closest to you?

A common mistake that many leaders make is to depend too heavily on their ‘position’ as a source of power. However, just being the ‘boss’ is rarely enough to engage people.

If you’re expecting a 41-gun salute every time you walk in the room, you’re going to be sadly disappointed. To engage the hearts and minds of the people around you, you need to work on your ‘personal’ power. Having the skills and ability to influence people regardless of the position you hold, will make a remarkable difference in the relationships you have with others.

So forget the pomp and pageantry of leadership and get to know your own strengths and weaknesses as this will help you become a more authentic, relatable leader. More importantly, get to know your team. Find out what inspires and motivates them, discover what ideas they have, understand how they want to contribute, and what they need from you to be the very best they can be.
